| The Rebuilding Of Classic Thunder |

Our first race was something really special to me
and the people who helped make it as successful as it was. It reaffirmed
my faith that there are still a lot of good people out there who will do
the right thing. The three of us had been talking about putting a race together
for quite some time now, but talk was all it was. I was sitting at my desk
one day and the phone rang. The voice on the other end said, "Bob,
we are gonna have the race at Ware Shoals on August 17th." I almost
fell out of my chair. Three weeks and four days to the date I just heard;
this was not looking good at all. I had to design the flyers, print the
flyers, and get the flyers to the public. Many nights, I didn't get any
sleep while printing flyers, but within several days I managed to print
about 15,000. I contacted my good friend and partner Bill Pratt of Draglist.com
and told him what was up. Bill dropped right into the stew and went to work.
Next to come on board was Brian Wood of Competition Plus. At that point,
I knew we had the internet covered from every angle possible.

So we had the internet covered and the flyers were
printed, but we needed something really special to bring the people in.
I'm proud to say we couldn't have done better. Alan Pittman and Ken Westbrook
took time from their busy schedule to push us over the edge with the Grave
Digger. On the day before the race, August 16th, we had planned a small
car show to help promote the race the following day. People from everywhere
came out to support us. Funny cars, altereds, dragsters, gassers, street
rods, and more. Alan and Ken brought the Grave Digger down and had it on
display. Ernie and Sandra Walker brought the Jungle Jim Vega and the Swenson
& Lani Mustang funny cars to the car show and to the race on Saturday.
 |
Since the race on August 17th, I have had numerous
phone calls and emails from fans and racers alike, talking about how much
fun they had. They thanked me for what I had done. The truth is, we had
the idea and got the word out. But it was the racers, Alan and Ken, Ernie
and Sandra, Roddy's Racing, Jim Dickey Racing, and many, many others whose
unselfish contributions made the inaugural Classic Thunder event a huge
success. |
